Overall I was quite pleased with the book and would rate it as one of the better space-operas or futuristic science fiction works that I have purchased on this site. The ship illustrations and genealogy included in the front of the book also help to give a sense of perspective on the 'lay of the land' as the story progresses. The space combat and technology are carefully researched, with well-couched limitations and improvisations sprinkled in effectively as the reader learns exactly how the technology within the universe works. The other perspectives, each with clear motivations and actions that move the story along, help to drive the tale forward nearly as much as the main protagonist does himself. I loved the 'main character,' as an intrepid spacer seeking order and 'honor' through service in his countries space navy. The authors do a great job of presenting, at least as I found it, a great starting point to those new to their works. I can also attest that I rarely felt lost or unsure as to what was going on as this detailed and politically complex book moved along.

I am about to start reading book two in the series. Then, of course, there's the hint at the end of the book that the Manticore Wormhole Junction is soon to be discovered! How will Manticore wrest control from the Axelrod corporation that is going to be investing billions into finding it? I think that the Duke of Burgundy should have still been of note and what about the Earls of Whitehaven? Maybe because of the fact that there are so many of them that it's impossible to keep up with them all. Many of the names of the nobles of the time are no longer prominent in Harrington's time. I must say that I find it fascinating to see Manticore at such an early stage of development. I think that young men and women who have these sorts of low esteem issues could gain great benefit from reading this book. Luckily, he also became noticed as someone who could think outside the box. So, he joined the navy but, unfortunately, didn't find what he was looking for and became known as a stiff necked rule follower. He also had low self esteem because he had no idea how to communicate with others. He was left to look after himself from a young age and ended up longing for strong guide lines. He didn't have the benefit of strong, loving parents. Travis Uriah Long isn't another Honor Harrington. I think that this is what we've all been waiting for from Weber! It's a good old fashioned space opera that can draw anybody in. With only modest interstellar trade, no foreign contacts to speak of, a plague ravaged economy to rebuild, and no enemies looming at the hyper limit, there are factions in Parliament who want nothing more than to scrap the Navy and shift its resources and manpower elsewhere.īut those factions are mistaken. The Star Kingdom is a minor nation among the worlds of the Diaspora, its closest neighbors weeks or months away, with little in the way of resources.
